A few keystrokes and we're good to go. FuKu has moved to its new platform in anticipation of Anime Expo 2010! Regulars, you may begin registering your comment profiles!

Why did we do this? Well, for starters, we needed a platform that was easier to update, and a sleeker and more accessible layout. On a more complex and serious level, the tone of FuKu was snarky and cute and angry, but we hardly kept our punches above the belt, and the actual thing we were railing against - inappropriate behavior in anime fandom - got a little lost in the mix. We hope to have more fun in our quest to embrace and denounce exactly how WEIRD fandom itself has gotten, with internet memes getting more cosplayers than actual shows, karaoke rooms swamped with Touhou remixes and vocaloid songs instead of themes, and the general attention-whoring that attracts people to fandom, rather than actual enjoyment of any anime or related media. At the risk of sounding nostalgic or philosophical, we'll also be adding several diverse voices from the rolling-your-eyes-at-anime-conventions community.

In other words, it's time to stop being angry, and it's time to start laughing a little harder at exactly how ridiculous this all has gotten. Fandom is funny, so enjoy the new FuKu!

On Fandom

October 27th, 2009

Fandom is like a blanket - you wrap yourself up in it to keep warm, tighter and tighter, until you suffocate. It's like a badge of honor or a military rank, a title that carries no prestige outside the esoteric world it inhabits, but you get a loaded pistol and go looking for excuses to use it. It's a secret society, a cult, with leaders and sheep, revered in their own circles for mere weekends a year in-between shifts at the nearest big box nightmare. Fandom is ambrosia and fandom is poison.

Main Characters, Left to Right: Purple Girl, Blue Girl, Other Purple Girl, and Pink Girl

This "Lucky Star" program has become popular with the kids lately for some reason, and, although it generally seems terrible, I feel compelled to check it out and type my immediate reactions in some window somewhere. That window happens to be here, and you happen to be reading it, so enjoy my immediate response to my first exposure to Lucky Star as I MARATHON THE ENTIRE SERIES:

Cosplay Bottom Ten – Photogenically Challenged

November 4th, 2003

With the launch of Fuckin' Otaku, we've got a wonderful backlog of terrible cosplay for you all! Aside from our posterchildren of bad cosplay found in the legendary article on Cosplay Warfare, this is the inaugural strike against the cosplaying world. Essentially, this month's theme is "acceptably good costumes, but terrible pictures!" So make sure you haven't eaten anything too easy to vomit and get your anti-retinal-scarring sunglasses ready! Here goes this November's Bottom Ten, after the jump!
